The Smith-class destroyers were a class of destroyers of the United States Navy. In 1903, the US Navy formulated a long-term plan for the defense of its battleship forces, which called for one destroyer for every battleship.

This plan included the construction of a destroyer with excellent seaworthiness, and this is what was built: Five ships of this class were built and used during World War I, but were decommissioned after only 11 years of service after the end of the war.

The USS Smith was the lead ship of the Smith-class destroyers of the United States Navy, and was named after Captain Joseph B. Smith, a monitor crew member who was killed in the Battle of Hampton Roads during the American Civil War. The ship was laid down in 1908, launched in 1909, and commissioned in November of the same year.
