The BTR-152 was a Soviet six-wheeled armored personnel carrier, initially developed based on the chassis and cab of the ZIS-151 truck. It began entering service in some Warsaw Pact member states in 1950 and became the mainstay of the Soviet motorized forces until it was replaced by the amphibious BTR-60 series in the 1960s.

The BTR-152 series was not only used by the Soviet Army but also exported in large quantities, resulting in a considerable production run. Later production models were based on the more reliable ZIL-157 truck. The three main variants of the BTR-152 appeared between 1950 and 1959: the basic armored personnel carrier, equipped with a 7.62mm or 12.7mm machine gun; an unarmed high-roof command vehicle; and a self-propelled anti-aircraft vehicle equipped with the ZPU-2 anti-aircraft gun. The BTR-152 series of personnel carriers could carry a complete infantry squad, or mortar and anti-tank squads. During its service in the Soviet Union, a significant number of these vehicles were also used to tow artillery.

The BTR-152K (equipped in 1959) featured a closed, armored roof with three large hatches for entry and exit, two of which could be opened simultaneously. The central inflation/deflation system was moved to a built-in configuration, along with an overpressure air filtration system. Due to the increased weight, the crew capacity decreased from 2-18 people to 2-13.
