The former Soviet Navy 1155 Project began in the 1970s, when due to cost issues, navies of various countries stopped researching large-displacement, single-mission ships. The former Soviet ship designers adopted an unusual development approach for surface warships, and developed two different types of warships at the same time, namely the 956 Project destroyers and the 1155 Project large anti-submarine ships. It is generally believed that this warship development plan of the former Soviet Union is basically equivalent to the Spruance-class destroyers of the US Navy, except that the settings of air defense missiles and air radars are different. The primary purpose of the design of the Courageous-class destroyer is to complete the anti-submarine mission, and it also needs to have a longer range and the ability to receive supplies during navigation, which is to meet the needs of ocean-going formation operations. The Courageous-class has changed the shortcomings of the previous Krivak-class anti-submarine frigates. The Krivak-class cannot carry helicopters, has low search capabilities, and has poor air defense capabilities. The Brave class has two helicopter hangars with sloping hangar doors and a spacious helicopter deck. The air defense system is equipped with 8 SA-N-11 missile launchers, AK-630 close-in defense guns and AK-100 dual-purpose anti-aircraft and anti-flag guns.
