The Imperial Russian Navy submarine Forel was designed and manufactured in 1903 at Friedrich Krupp Germania Welft in Germany. She was the first submarine manufactured in Germany, and was intended to be used by the German Navy; however, they were not interested, and Russia purchased it instead. The Forel was propelled by an electric motor, so she had to be carried close to her target by a ship from which she was launched. She was put into service in the Siberian fleet in October 1904 during the Russo-Japanese War, although she never saw combat. She was used as a training vessel after the Russo-Japanese War, and sank in an accident in 1910.
