In the early 1980s, the U.S. military developed a new family of vehicles based on the 365-horsepower 27.365VFAE (8 x 8) chassis for its troops stationed in Western Europe. The basic models of this standardized, universal chassis were the M1001 tractor and the M1002 battlefield recovery vehicle. Later developments included the 10-ton flatbed trailer tractor M1014 and the M1013 with a crane, capable of towing Patriot missile systems and Pershing II ballistic missiles.
