Now it seems imminent: the end of Lufthansa's four-engine fleet is inexorably approaching. With 17 aircraft, Germany's largest airline was one of the largest operators of the Airbus A340-600. During the coronavirus pandemic, the end seemed sealed. But when demand quickly rose again after the lockdowns ended – faster than new aircraft could be produced and added to the fleet – Lufthansa decided to reactivate ten of the 75-meter-long aircraft. As of August 2025, six aircraft are still active, and at least two more are scheduled to be retired in the fall of 2025.
