The Hotchkiss H39 was an improved version of the earlier H35 light tank, developed by France in the late 1930s as part of its effort to modernise its armoured forces before the outbreak of the Second World War.

Compact, well-armoured for its size, and mechanically more reliable than its predecessor, the H39 featured an upgraded engine that provided better speed and mobility on the battlefield.

One of the most significant enhancements to later production H39 tanks was the introduction of the 37mm SA38 gun.

This longer-barrelled weapon offered a marked improvement in anti-armour performance compared to the earlier SA18 gun, giving the H39 a far better chance against contemporary German tanks during the 1940 campaign.

The SA38’s increased muzzle velocity allowed it to penetrate thicker armour at greater distances, making it a more credible threat despite the tank’s small size.

The H39 retained a cast hull and turret design, providing good protection for a light tank, but like many French vehicles of the period, it was operated by a small crew—often placing a heavy workload on the commander, who also served as gunner and loader.

This limitation affected battlefield efficiency despite the tank’s otherwise solid design.

Following the fall of France, many Hotchkiss H39 tanks were captured and repurposed by German forces, where they were used for occupation duties, training, and even converted into self-propelled guns and other specialised vehicles.

Despite its constraints, the H39 with the 37mm SA38 gun represents a notable step forward in French tank development, combining improved firepower, mobility, and protection in a compact and distinctive design.
