The Renault YS Command Tank was a specialised French armoured command and communications vehicle developed in the mid-1930s, based on the chassis of the Renault UE tracked carrier.

Designed to support armoured and motorised units, the YS played a vital role in battlefield coordination rather than direct combat.

Unlike frontline tanks, the Renault YS was lightly armoured and unarmed, with its internal layout dedicated to radio equipment, command instruments, and space for officers.

Early versions were fitted with distinctive tall superstructures to accommodate multiple radio sets and aerials, reflecting the French Army’s growing emphasis on mechanised command and control during the interwar period.

The vehicle was primarily issued to headquarters units and armoured formations, where it was used to relay orders, manage troop movements, and maintain communication between dispersed units.

Although limited in numbers and rendered obsolete by the rapid developments of World War II, the Renault YS represents an important step in the evolution of armoured command vehicles.

Compact, unusual in appearance, and historically significant, the Renault YS Command Tank is an interesting subject for modellers with an interest in early-war French armour and support vehicles.
