On Bennelong Point — known as Tubowgule to the traditional custodians of the land, the Gadigal — stands one of the most recognised buildings on Earth. But the Sydney Opera House began as nothing more than a dream on paper. In 1956, an international design competition invited the world to imagine a great opera house. From 233 designs, a young Danish architect named Jørn Utzon won with his bold vision of a soaring, shell-shaped roofs. Construction of the Opera House was expected to take three years. Instead, it took fourteen years — and more than 10,000 workers — to bring the extraordinary sails to life.

Today, approximately 1 million tiles shimmer across its roof, which stands 67 metres above sea level – as high as a 22-storey building. Behind its iconic curves, world-class theatres come alive 363 days a year, and in 2022 its Concert Hall reopened with dazzling new acoustics. In 2007, the world agreed on its greatness, when the Sydney Opera House was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
