The Avro Lancaster is a British World War II medium-wing, four-engine, all-metal strategic bomber. The prototype first flew in January 1941, and mass production began later that year. The Lancaster was based on the Avro Manchester. It was powered by a minimum of four Rolls-Royce Merlin XX V engines, each producing 1,280 hp (Mk.I), or four Bristol Hercules VI engines, each producing 1,737 hp, although other engines were also used. Series production took place at the Avro, Metropolitan-Vickers, Armstrong Whitworth, Vickers Armstrong, and Victoria Aircraft plants, and by early 1946, 7,377 aircraft had been produced. There were four main versions of the Avro Lancaster (Mk.I, Mk.II, Mk.III, and Mk.X), which were externally similar to one another. The Avro Lancaster was the RAF's primary strategic bomber and, at the same time, gained a reputation as the best. It was easy to fly, had a high lift capacity, and was characterized by the long durability of its airframe. On occasion, the bomber was able to complete its mission and return to base even with an engine failure. The aircraft entered service in December 1941 and served until the end of the war, primarily performing strategic bombing duties. These Lancasters from RAF 617 Bomber Squadron were used in May 1943 to damage dams in the Ruhr. Technical data (Mk.I version): Length: 21.11 m, Wingspan: 31.09 m, Height: 6.25 m, Maximum speed: 456 km/h, Maximum range: 4073 km, Maximum ceiling: 6500 m, Armament: Fixed - 8 x 7.7 mm Browning machine guns, Bomb load: Up to 6300 kg of bombs or one Grand Slam bomb (10000 kg) after modification of the bomb bay.
