The IS-5 is a Soviet heavy tank from the Cold War period. The first prototypes of this vehicle appeared at the turn of 1948/1949, and a small batch of these vehicles, probably consisting of about 10 units, was created in 1950. The car, however, never entered mass production. The drive was provided by a single V-12 engine with a capacity of 700 HP. The main armament consisted of a 122mm D-25TA gun, and the secondary armament of 1-2 machine guns. The IS-5 vehicle was developed at the Chelyabinsk plant by a team of engineers led by Józef Jakowlewicz Kotin and in fact was a deep modernization of the IS-4, which in turn was based on the IS-2M3. Compared to its predecessor, it had improved armor, a changed shape of the turret and its lowered profile. Probably a new type of suspension was also tested on it, but these data are not certain. However, it is almost certain that the IS-5 cars that were built in the pre-series had the same suspension as the IS-4. Ultimately, however, the IS-5 did not enter mass production and was only a stage in the development of tanks from the IS-2 family.
