USS Langley (CV-1) became the U.S. Navy's first aircraft carrier when commissioned in March 1922. She was converted from USS Jupiter (Collier #3), which was the U.S. Navy's first surface ship propelled by electric motors when commissioned in April 1913. Following tests in the Atlantic in 1924, she became the test platform for developing carrier operating techniques and tactics while serving in the Pacific.
