IL-78M is a Soviet Air Force aerial tanker converted to IL-76MD transport aircraft. The western code is MIDAS. As an alternative to low-efficiency aerial tankers converted from transport aircraft, development began in 1970. Completed in 1987 and began to deploy troops. The initial production model maintained its original performance as a transport aircraft, and loaded and unloaded fuel tanks for refueling in the cargo hold. The current body has fixed fuel tanks for refueling, and the amount of fuel loaded has also been increased. The air refueling is a 3-point refueling type: it is housed in the left side of the fuselage and the oil delivery holes at the ends of the two wings, as well as the refueling control tube and extraction. Cannon seats and refueling operator seats are replaced.
