Work on the RT-2PM Topol system began in 1977, and the work was divided between the MITT plants in Moscow and the Tytan Central Design Office in Volgograd. Work on the system after 1979 broke the provisions of the SALT II Disarmament Treaty. The RT-2PM Topol system is based on a mobile platform based on the chassis of the MAZ-7310 or MAZ-7917 tractor unit. Also the command, battlefield management and communication systems included in the system are fully mobile. Trials and modernizations of the prototypes started in 1983, and the first missiles began to reach the units in 1985, but only in 1987-1988 did they reach full combat readiness. The Topol missiles are currently used by the armed forces of the Russian Federation, and their modernized version is the Topol-M missile.
