The Katyusha multiple rocket launcher was a type of rocket artillery first manufactured and put into use by the Soviet Union during World War II. It could fire multiple rockets in rapid succession, providing fire coverage to a target area faster than traditional artillery, but its accuracy was lower and reloading time was longer. Compared to traditional artillery, it offered relatively less protection, but it was cheaper and easier to produce.

During World War II, the Katyusha was typically mounted on a truck. This gave the Katyusha greater mobility, enabling it to launch sudden, large-scale fire strikes and then quickly relocate before enemy counter-battery fire could converge.

The BM-13 NM used the post-war ZIL-157 chassis, which was produced between 1958 and 1960.
