The DD51 is a representative diesel locomotive for main lines of the Japanese National Railways (JNR), with 649 units manufactured from 1962. For snowy regions, including Hokkaido, a special A-type cold-weather specification with rotating windows was deployed.
Among the vehicles in the Hokkaido region inherited by JR Freight, those with only aging parts updated were called the A-type updated color, featuring a blue body with a cream-colored front, and appeared from 2004 onwards. In their later years, JR Freight's Hokkaido-based DD51 locomotives were concentrated at the Washibetsu locomotive depot, and all were retired in 2014, handing over their duties to the successor DF200.
