The Hughes OH-6A Cayuse is a light observation helicopter developed for the United States Army as part of the Light Observation Helicopter (LOH) programme.

Designed and manufactured by Hughes Helicopters, the OH-6A became widely known by its nickname “Loach” (Light Observation Helicopter) and earned a strong reputation for agility, reliability, and survivability.

Featuring a compact fuselage and a powerful turboshaft engine, the OH-6A offered exceptional manoeuvrability and a small visual and radar signature, making it ideal for reconnaissance, target acquisition, liaison, and command support roles.

Its excellent low-speed handling and ability to operate close to the ground allowed crews to observe enemy activity in challenging environments, particularly during the Vietnam War.

The helicopter could be flown unarmed or fitted with light weapons such as machine guns or rocket pods, depending on mission requirements.

Its versatility also extended to medical evacuation, artillery spotting, and escort duties when operating as part of hunter-killer teams alongside armed attack helicopters.

The OH-6A Cayuse became one of the most iconic light helicopters of its era, influencing later observation and scout helicopter designs and remaining a symbol of airborne reconnaissance operations during the Cold War period.
