The 485 series is an AC/DC dual-mode express train manufactured from 1968, and was used on major electrified lines throughout Japan except for Shikoku.

The "Raicho" service connecting Kansai and Hokuriku used the 485 series for many years, but with the introduction of the successor 681 and 683 series, it was withdrawn from the "Raicho" service in 2011.
