US Navy DD-537 USS Sullivan Overall length: 114.8 meters Width: 12.1 meters Draft: 4.1 meters Displacement: 2050 tons The destroyer DD-537 was originally named "Putnam". On February 6, 1943, the ship was renamed the USS Sullivan in memory of the five Sullivan brothers who were missing together in the sinking of the cruiser USS Juneau. On April 4, 1943, driven by a shot of champagne from Mrs. Thomas F. Sullivan, the mother of the five Sullivan brothers, the "Sullivan" began to be launched and outfitted, and was completed and put into service five months later. . The "Sullivan" arrived at Pearl Harbor on December 28, 1943, and began its combat career in the Pacific waters. Over the next 19 months, the Sullivans performed its duties brilliantly. During the operation, she not only had to provide direction for the bombers, but also protected the aircraft carriers in the formation, and even served as a guard post during attacks by Japanese suicide planes. On January 10, 1946, the "Sullivan" was decommissioned in San Diego. On July 6, 1951, due to the outbreak of the Korean War, the "Sullivan" rejoined the U.S. Navy until it was officially decommissioned on January 7, 1965. The "Sullivan" received a total of nine Battle Star Medals during its service in World War II and two Battle Star Medals during the Korean War.
