In the autumn of 1941, the Soviet High Command requested the development of a tank capable of effectively supporting infantry. Under the guidance of engineers V. Sidorenko and N. Yushchenko, they designed Project 229 in December 1941. This project used the hull of the KV-1 Mod 1942, with the U-11 122mm howitzer as its main armament. The first prototype was completed in April 1942. After testing, it was designated KV-9. The tank weighed 47 tons and required a crew of four: two in the turret and two on either side of the driver's compartment. The turret was derived from the easily replaceable KV-1 tank and possessed excellent frontal protection, with 135mm of armor on the front of the turret and 40mm of armor on the top. It was equipped with a TMFD sight. The U-11 gun could use M-30 howitzer ammunition, with an firing angle of -4° to +19.5°. The tank is equipped with 48 rounds of grenade launcher and three 7.62 mm DT machine guns with 2,646 rounds of machine gun ammunition.
