Cleopatra VII Philopator

The last active ruler of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt and remains one of the most famous women in history.

Born in 69 BC, she belonged to the Ptolemaic dynasty, a Greek royal family descended from one of Alexander the Great's generals who had ruled Egypt for nearly three centuries following his death.

Ascending to the throne in 51 BC, Cleopatra inherited a kingdom facing political instability, economic challenges and increasing pressure from the expanding Roman Republic.

Unlike many of her predecessors, she actively embraced Egyptian culture and is believed to have been the first Ptolemaic ruler to learn the Egyptian language in addition to Greek and several other languages.

Her intelligence, political skill and diplomatic abilities helped her navigate the complex power struggles of the ancient Mediterranean world.

Cleopatra is perhaps best known for her relationships with two of Rome's most powerful figures, Julius Caesar and later Mark Antony.

Her alliance with Caesar helped secure her position on the Egyptian throne, while her partnership with Antony developed into both a political and personal relationship that shaped the future of the eastern Mediterranean.

Together they sought to preserve Egypt's independence and strengthen their influence against their rivals in Rome.

The decisive turning point came in 31 BC at the Battle of Actium, where the forces of Antony and Cleopatra were defeated by Octavian, the future Emperor Augustus.

Following the loss of Egypt and the collapse of their political position, Antony and Cleopatra both took their own lives in 30 BC.

With Cleopatra's death, the Ptolemaic Kingdom came to an end and Egypt became a province of the Roman Empire.

Throughout history, Cleopatra has been remembered as a capable ruler, skilled diplomat and influential political leader.

While later legends often focused on her beauty and romantic relationships, modern historians increasingly recognise her achievements as a monarch who fought to preserve her kingdom during one of the most turbulent periods of ancient history.

Her life and legacy continue to inspire books, films, artworks and historical studies more than two thousand years after her death.
