Russian artillery enjoyed a formidable reputation during the Napoleonic Wars and was regarded as one of the strongest arms of the Imperial Russian Army. In the years surrounding the campaigns of 1805-1807, major reforms standardized its organization and equipment, creating batteries capable of delivering powerful and sustained fire in support of the infantry.

One of the most distinctive Russian artillery weapons was the unicorn, or licorne, a type of gun-howitzer developed in Russia during the eighteenth century. It combined some of the characteristics of a conventional cannon and a howitzer, allowing it to fire solid shot, explosive shells and other ammunition. Its longer barrel gave it greater range and accuracy than many contemporary howitzers, while its conical chamber made it particularly well suited to shell fire.
