The Brewster SB2A Buccaneer (or Bermuda) was a World War II reconnaissance and bomber aircraft produced in the United States in a high-wing configuration with a classic retractable undercarriage. The prototype first flew in 1941, and serial production lasted from 1942 to 1944. The SB2A-2 version was powered by a single Wright R-2600-8 engine with 170 hp. The onboard armament consisted of six Browning M2 and M1919 machine guns, caliber 7.62 and 12.7 mm. The aircraft could also carry a bomb load of up to 454 kilograms. The Brewster SB2A Buccaneer was developed primarily for the needs of the US Navy, but also for the armed forces of the Netherlands, France and Great Britain. After the defeat of the Netherlands and France in 1940 in the clash with the Third Reich, the orders of these countries were taken over by the governments of the USA and Great Britain. The machine was developed based on the XSBA-1 reconnaissance plane, also manufactured by Brewster. Despite a relatively long period of research and development, the Brewster SB2A Buccaneer turned out to be a completely unsuccessful plane, characterized in particular by a too weak engine, mediocre performance and plagued by numerous technical problems. For these reasons, the Brewster SB2A Buccaneer machines were not used in combat, but were used as training machines or towing air targets.
