Hasegawa 00447 1/72 F-104S/F-104G Starfighter Italian/Luftwaffe

The F-104 was developed as a supersonic air superiority fighter. Featuring a small, lightweight airframe and a powerful engine capable of reaching a maximum speed of Mach 2, the F-104 was said to be the last manned fighter of its kind. However, due to subsequent changes in the U.S. Air Force's policy, the F-104's small size meant that it could not accommodate data links and other equipment, resulting in only a small number of deployments. However, the F-104G, featuring a completely redesigned electronics system, particularly the fire control system, and an enlarged vertical stabilizer and rudder, was jointly produced in Europe, as well as by Lockheed and Canadair, and was used by NATO countries. The F-104S, developed at the request of the Italian Air Force, featured a 5,380 kg thrust J79-GE-19 engine (8,120 kg with A/B), compatibility with AIM-7 Sparrows, and an R-21G radar for improved all-weather interception capabilities. It also featured nine hardpoints to increase the external weaponry capacity and strengthened ground attack capabilities. The F-104J and twin-seater F-104DJ used by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force were returned to the United States in 1985 and then donated to Taiwan.
