The Conqueror is the second of the Royal Navy's Churchill-class nuclear submarines and the ninth ship to carry the Conqueror name. It's the only nuclear submarine to have engaged a combat ship and sunk it with a torpedo.
Launched in 1969 and commissioned in 1971, the Conqueror, like other British nuclear submarines during the Cold War, was built to counter the threat of the Soviet Navy, either by monitoring Soviet nuclear submarine activity or by attacking submarines and surface ships.
During the Falklands War of 1982, she was used to guard the outer edge of the task force around the Falkland Islands, and on May 2 of the same year, she sank the Argentine Navy cruiser Heneral Belgrano.
After the conflict, the Conqueror returned to England and served in the North Atlantic until her decommissioning in 1990.
