The Greco-Persian Wars were fought from 492 BC to 449 BC between the Achaemenid Persian expeditionary forces and the allied forces of the Greek cities. The heavy infantry of the Persian army had soldiers with spears wearing crest flags so commanders and soldiers knew the location of the troops where the flag was raised. The role of flag-bearing soldiers was important and honorable, but they were lightly armed compared to other hoplites and were therefore in constant danger on the battlefield.
