Between the two Wars, numerous Navies built development programs for flotillas of motor torpedo boats capable of carrying out patrol and attack missions. The new engine technologies guaranteed, compared to the First World War, greater performance and greater operational effectiveness. During the 1930s, the German Kriegsmarine developed the famous S-class torpedo boats. Among the most famous Schnellboote we can mention those that belonged to the S-38 version. Produced in almost 100 units, they were 35 meters long and had a full load displacement of over 100 tons. Thanks to the Daimler Benz 12-cylinder engines it was able to reach a maximum speed of 39.5 knots. Armed with two 533 mm torpedo launchers. she was also equipped with several types of light armament. Some of these employed the highly effective 40mm Bofors cannon on board. Captured as war booty during the early years of the war, the Bofors proved to be a valuable and valued embarked gun far superior to the German equivalent. The S-38 was the technological basis for the development of the later S-100.
