"Atomic Annie," also known as the "Cold War Magic Cannon," refers to the M65 atomic cannon designed by the United States for the Cold War. It was specifically designed to fire nuclear shells and was officially named the 280mm A-type cannon. It used hydraulic loading, and the explosive power of its nuclear shells was equivalent to one-quarter of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima (15,000 TNT equivalent), or the power of 4,000 rounds of 155mm artillery shells. Its objective was to counterbalance the armored forces of the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact.May 25, 1953In Nevada, the 867th Field Artillery Battalion of the U.S. Army conducted its first firing test, sending a mushroom cloud rising 32 kilometers away. In 1963, "Atomic Annie" was mothballed as a reserve weapon and decommissioned.
