Developed in the 60s, the Lockheed SR-71 "Blackbird" was a reconnaissance aircraft from Lockheed's Skunk Works. The Blackbird operated at high speeds and was able to outrace missiles using strategic evasive maneuvers when detecting surface-to-air missile launches. The "Blackbird" or "Habu" (among many monikers) served the US Air Force from 1964-1998. 32 aircraft were produced; 12 were lost in accidents, but none due to hostile actions. It has since achieved a world speed record for air-breathing manned aircraft.

The SR-71 Blackbird set the world speed record for manned aircraft with air-breathing engines when Col. Lt. Raymond E. "Ed" and Lt . Col. Joseph T. Yeilding "JT" Vida traveled on 6 March 1990 from L.A. to Washington, DC in a mere 1 hour, 4 minutes, 20 seconds. This was the aircraft's final military mission.
