The RAAF purchased 75 F/A-18A and B variants in 1981, with A21-1 being the first of the 57 “A” variants. It flew for decades often operated by the No. 75 Squadron (the Magpies) and No. 77 Squadron before the RAAF officially retired its Classic Hornet fleet in late 2021 as they transitioned to the F-35A Lightning II.
