In The Grim Darkness of The Far Future There is Only War

10th Edition Warhammer 40K Leviathan Space Marines vs Tyranids

It is the 42nd Millennium and the fourth Tyrannic War has begun. Hive Fleet Leviathan points its tendrils this time towards terror and Guilliman, The Lord Solar, Commander Dante and the newly awakened Lion El'Johnson wonder if the Imperium can withstand the largest tyrannic fleet seen ever in the galaxy. That is the setting to which 10th edition of Warhammer 40,000 takes place. And as it goes into double digits, it comes with a complete rules reset. This is something we were surprised to see. The last time they did a rules reset was with an eighth edition in 2017. However, before that it was 1998 with third edition. This happens once in a Blue Moon people, and this time it is a complete rules reset, taking out the incredibly complex (some would say bloated) edition of ninth and is replacing it. Not with a simpler game, just a more streamlined and more approachable game. It is a much more rules healthy game and definitely a great time to start a Warhammer army. Especially if you are partial towards either Space Marines or Tyranids, there is no better place to start than the Leviathan box set.

10th Edition Warhammer 40K Leviathan

This limited run box set similar to the Indomitus box that was released for ninth, is massive. Oh My Gosh!  The Model Count, we are gushing at just how big this box set is. 25 New Space Marine models and 47 brand new Tyranid models. Every single model released for this edition so far is in this box set. On the space marine side we finally have Terminators.

Terminator Squad

Warhammer 40K Leviathan Terminators

Everyone saying that Gravis power armour was going to replace Terminators is wrong, Terminators are back. They are now in a true scale, which means that they don't look incredibly funny and stupid next to new primaris marines.

Librarian in Terminator Armour

Librarian in Terminator Armour

There are four new heroes, one of which is a Librarian in Terminator Armour, and he is looking absolutely wonderful.

Captain in Terminator Armour

Captain in Terminator Armour

A resilient Captain shrouded in a tactical Dreadnaught armour who is exceptional at leading Terminator Strikes deep behind enemy lines.

Apothecary Biologis

Apothecary Biologis

Key to any victory is understanding your enemy and it is the Apothecary Biologis in Gravis Armour that excels in this field, able to with stand hellfire to collect samples of enemy bio matter.

Lieutenant in Phobos Armour

Lieutenant in Phobos Armour

Finally the hero to infiltrate and sow discord among enemies is the combi-weapon and two combat blades wielding Lieutenant in Phobos Armour.

Sternguard Veteran Squad
Warhammer 40K Leviathan Sternguard Veteran Squad

The Leviathan comes with a squad of Sternguard veterans. While Bladeguard veterans have been the backbone of a lot of space marine armies. If you don't like close combat, Sternguard veterans are definitely going to be what you want to get.

Infernus Squad

Warhammer 40K Leviathan Infernus Squad

The infernus squad heavy flamers finally bringing it to primaris armed with Pyreblasters perfect for taking on hordes of Xenos.

Ballistus Dreadnought

Warhammer 40K Leviathan Ballistus Dreadnought

And then finally, the Ballistuc Dreadnought mixed with the Redemptor and Brutalis Dreadnought we can now round out the grand trifecta of Dreadnoughts. The ballistic dreadnought comes with two wonderfully good heavy weapons. We believe updating the Ironclad dreadnought variant from so long ago, again not looking as stupid or as silly next to primaris marines.

There is so much Goodness in this box, however, that is slightly outweighed in our opinion by the bugs. The tyranids get the largest model release in over 13 years at least. And this is a doozy. Four big new bugs.

Winged Tyranid Prime

Warhammer 40K Leviathan Winged Tyranid Prime

The tyrant prime is looking devilish as ever, winged and ready to bring utter terror.

Neurotyrant

Warhammer 40K Tyranids Nuerotyrant

The neurotyrant a gigantic big beastie bug ready to bring psychic mayhem to everyone on the battlefield.

Screamer-Killer
Warhammer 40K Tyranids Screamer-Killer

The Carnifexes screamer-killer looking utterly horrendous. The largest Carnifexes by far and probably our favourite mini in the entire box.

Psychophage

 Warhammer 40K Tyranids Psychophage

And the scary new Psychophage, probably not a leading commanding unit. But if you are up against anyone with a psycher, they better beware. They're in for a gas filled scare.

Von Ryan’s Leapers

Warhammer 40K Leviathan Tyranid Von Ryan’s Leapers

Leapers are also an interesting new addition, another bug to bring fear to the fearless Astartes. Small elite tactical units that will probably work well with a Lictor in being able to cement themselves behind enemy lines and do some tricky little plays.

Neurogaunts

Warhammer 40k Leviathan Tyranid Neurogaunts

There are two new types of gaunts the neurogaunts, basically psychic chafe, freeing up your neurotyrant and Psychophage. Basically being a large anvil between your incredibly squishy glass cannons and the barbgaunt walking artillery. Utterly scary. Really, really cool to add to your tyranid army.

Barbgaunts

Warhammer 40K Tyranid Barbgaunts

And, speaking or artillery, Barbgaunts handily fit that position. They are basically walking artillery bugs ready to bring down any tank that enters their line of sight

Termagants
Warhammer 40K Tyranid Termagants

And finally, there are new Termagants sculpts. After how long! it has been so long and the old Termagants model is basically ingrained itself in my brain. I love the new sculpts. They all just look magnificent. Big, chunky, brutal. Definitely something that brings untold terror to the Imperium and the galaxy at large.

All of the models I have just said are in the leviathan box set, and there is even more the full 392 page rulebook. Hardcover filled with rules and the lore is in there for your pleasure.

Warhammer 40k 10th edition rule book includes lore

The Leviathan mission deck, right? 66 different missions for you to choose from or draw randomly. Absolutely wonderful. It isn't like the data cards in ninth edition. They aren't army rules. These are just to help you play the game, Wonderful. They are great and certainly help in streamlining the game for you. There is also some nice transfers and a great art print in there as well.
Warhammer 40k 10th edition rulebook mission cards and transfers

So if you want to get started in 10th edition, this is a wonderful, wonderful box. It works as a wonderful starter set. While it does have very high price point, the content excels expectations. However, it is a discounted box set. Already buying each model individually along with the rulebook would definitely cost a lot more overall and you also get a bigger discount at Metro hobbies. On top of that, if the price point still looks a little bit scary for you. If say, you're into space Marines, but you're not particularly that into Tyranids. But you have a friend who's into Tyranids. Feel free to split the box with a friend. You get such an awesome deal. So many great minis and the minis themselves are something to be adored. They are push fit Minis don't need glue for them. Now, if you don't like push fit models don't worry. It has had a history of just being able to snip out all of the tabs and just glue them as per normal. However, if you are looking to get started and you're scared with all the different types of glue, then this is a definite, great way to get started into the hobby.  And also you don't need primer for the plastic minis at all.Right. They already come either pre primed, or the plastic itself works really, really well with acrylic paint. You are able to assemble them and immediately apply paint. Absolutely wonderful. The people over at Citadel are doing some great things with their sculpts. Not only that, but new models also make it great to add to existing armies. If you already have an existing army, say, a tyranid army. This will be the best and probably cheapest way to get into 10th edition and get every single new Tyranid scuplt. With all the new sculpts that is basically coming out now, there has never been a better time to get started in a Warhammer. We are so excited. This new edition is probably going to be wonderful. We love this, Hell, yeah!
