The BGM-109 Tomahawk is a modern American maneuvering missile that entered service in 1983. The projectile is 6.25 meters long with a diameter of 518 millimeters. The curb weight of the missile is 1,300 kg, and the mass of the warhead can be up to 300 kilograms. The top speed does not exceed 890 km / h. Design work on the Tomahawk missile was initiated in 1972, when the American armed forces decided to start work on means of delivering nuclear weapons that would not violate the provisions of the SALT I Treaty.
Development of the new weapon proceeded relatively quickly and finally, its production was due to two companies are responsible: Boeing and General Dynamics. Currently, the missiles are manufactured mainly by Raytheon. Several variants of the BGM-109 Tomahawk were created in the course of production.
One of the first was BGM-109G GLCM, that is, a tactical nuclear missile that carries W84 warheads and is transported on special wheeled launchers. It was decommissioned in 1991. Other versions include: BGM-109B (anti-ship version with a conventional warhead) or BGM-109C (tactical ground-to-ground missile with a conventional warhead).
