In the late 1950s the Midland Railway of Western Australia (MRWA) purchased 7 diesel electric locomotives from English Electric of Rocklea in Queensland. These were based upon the SAR 800 class design but were fitted with 3 axle bogies unlike the 800 class 2 axle design.
Delivered in 1958 to the then Midland Railway of Western Australia, they were then sold to the West Australian Government Railways in 1964.
Much of their working in WAGR traffic was on branchlines like the Pemberton to Northcliffe and use around Perth as a shunting engine. Most saw service up until the late 1980s.
