The Mitsubishi J4M was a reciprocal-propelled air defense fighter planned by the Japanese Navy from the early to mid-Pacific War.

In the prototype plan drafted in 1942, a maximum speed of 750km/h was requested, it needed to be able to reach an altitude of 8,000 meters in 10 minutes, and it would be armed with a 30mm machine gun, a pair of 20mm machine guns, and two bombs weighing 30kg each.

The single-engine twin body design was specifically created to be able to carry two bombs. It was planned to be equipped with the Ha-43 engine, which was under development at Mitsubishi; the engine would be cooled by an air intake installed at the rear of the fuselage. The horizontal stabilizer was also installed higher than the main wing to escape the airflow from the propeller. However, the engine's development was delayed; wind tunnel tests also proved that the horizontal stabilizer vibrated abnormally due to the propeller's wake, and so development of the J4M was discontinued in 1944.
