Together with the Executive, S, Berlina, Calais, and longer wheelbase Statesman and Caprice VQ's, it provided the general public with a stunning new range to pick from.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eMarch 1989, however, saw the most exciting model announcement of the lot - the incredibly tough SS, a bang-for-your-buck V8 brute that redefined Holden's V8 performance. Ushering in an entirely new 165kw electronic fuel injected (EFI) version of the much-loved Aussie V8, the SS blew everything else into the weeds for the day.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eThe EFI system wasn't the only feature the SS boasted. The Australian arm of the British Motor Corporation, Leyland Australia, had seen the need to have a large family car in their stables, and thus the idea for the P76 was born. Aimed to compete directly with the Ford Falcon and Holden Kingswood, it was decided that it should have a similar wheelbase to the Falcon, have more interior space than a Valiant, and a bigger boot than the Kingswood, and be more reliable than all three. With a meagre development budget of just $21m AUD ($283m AUD in today’s money) Leyland Australia set about developing the P76 with a heaping pile of features not found on any locally manufactured car at the time, and some that took nearly 10 years for the “Big Three” to incorporate.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe P76 was developed with a new 4.4 litre alloy V8 or 2.6 litre six cylinder engine connected to either a 3 speed manual column shift, a 4 speed manual floor shift, or a 3 speed automatic Borg Warner gearbox. It was fitted with MacPherson strut front suspension, 4 link coil spring live axle rear suspension, power disc brakes, and side intrusion bars as well, another first for the P76. The body shell was a monocoque unibody construction which gave the car a surprisingly low kerb weight of 1275kg, a good 230kg lighter than its counterparts. Its interior was roomy and well appointed and featured a cavernous boot, so large in fact that one of its claims to fame was the ability to house an entire 44 gallon drum and close the lid! The exterior styling set it aside from the softer Falcon and Kingswood, and was affectionately known as “The Wedge”.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWith all of these features it took out Wheels Magazine’s coveted ‘Car of the Year’ award for 1973. Australians flocked to Leyland dealerships to buy the new wonder car but were met with an immediate shortage of cars, and long delivery delays. Flagging under the pressure to supply, Leyland rushed to deliver cars, and many had issues. Within months any problem – seemingly no matter how small - became national news and the view of the general public switched from wonder car to lemon. To make matters worse, British Leyland was crumbling and unable to support Leyland Australia, in fact there were rumours of British Leyland siphoning funds from Leyland Australia further worsening the situation. At the same time Australia was hit with a ‘Credit Squeeze’ and the pressure of the 1973 oil crisis pushed large family cars firmly out of fashion. By the mid 1970’s the perfect storm of conditions had killed Leyland, and with it the P76.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMeanwhile, the P76 was proving to be a contender on the world rally circuit, winning the Targa Florio section of the 1974 World Rally, and placed 13th overall. Leyland celebrated this victory by releasing the “Targa Florio” version with mag wheels, a sports steering wheel, limited slip diff and graphics pack.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe short-lived production run of the P76 ended in November 1974 with 18007 cars produced. It’s estimated that around 5000 cars still survive to this day in the hands of die-hard enthusiasts. Since its inception, the P76 has been a trend-setter, a polariser, a pariah, but undeniably a key part of Australia’s motoring history.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLove it or hate it, it’s earned it’s place as one of Australia’s most memorable cars.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNow, 50 years after the release of the P76 to the Australian public, Authentic Collectables are excited to announce to collectors the P76 Targa Florio in Omega Navy, has been produced in 1:18 scale sealed body with high detail. With sumptuous carpeting, super comfortable interior “furniture” more akin to a gentleman’s club than a car, and the venerable 307 Chev V8 coupled with a Powerglide automatic transmission, it was aimed squarely at taking a chunk of the market share away from Ford’s imported Fairlane.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBased on the HK Premier chassis, the Brougham’s boot was lengthened 200mm in a curious decision by GMH to extend the length of the car, but not the wheelbase. This left the cabin no larger than the Premier, while having a cavernous boot and an overhang past the rear wheels that could only be described by today’s standards as excessive. Still, it gave the Brougham a longer, more elegant look than the Premier, and with the ultra-wide C pillar, there was enough room in the back for the massive rear seat, upholstered in embroidered “Brocade” fabric, and featuring the stylized Brougham emblem embossed into the fold-down centre armrest.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNo seat belts were fitted to the rear, only a set of hand straps were available for the passengers which in today’s safety conscious climate is a quaint touch. Up front, the Brougham was fitted with low-back seats, Frigidiare air conditioning, power windows and an 11 transistor push button radio - no doubt super-cool at the time! The doors were upholstered in wood grain, carpet and vinyl trim, featuring the Brougham logos on the front doors and individual courtesy lights for the rear passengers finished the whole ensemble off to be a Cadillac of Fishermans Bend origin. Power steering and power assisted brakes with front discs were standard, something rarely seen at the time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSadly the lengthening of the shell, pushing the centre of gravity rearwards, and it’s increased weight meant that the performance of the Brougham was hampered – it had a tendency to oversteer at the drop of a hat, not to mention the 2 speed Powerglide transmission sucked the joy out of the 307’s power - and at the time, motoring critics were scathing of it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe HK suffered in the GMH showrooms too, being outsold hands down by the Fairlane. GMH did fix some of the issues of the HK in future HT and HG models, but in some respects the ship had sailed with the HK. It did however pave the way for GMH to become a market leader in high end limousine style cars in the future with the Statesman and Caprice lineages running right to the end of Holden’s production in 2017.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMore than 50 years on, the Brougham remains a cult classic, with many people having fond memories of floating around the countryside in soft-furnished comfort.
