The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was an iconic WWII fighter with innovative twin-engined, twin-boom fuselages, plus a central cockpit nacelle. First flying in 1939, the aircraft saw service in both the Pacific and European theatres in World War II, but claimed fame for its daring exploits in the former. The F variant featured pylons for 150-gallon drop tanks to make it capable of long missions. Later P-38 G versions had more powerful engines and could carry larger 300-gallon drop tanks. The P-38 was used for interception, dive bombing, level bombing, ground attack, night fighting, photo reconnaissance, radar and visual pathfinding for bombers and evacuation missions, and extensively as a long-range escort fighter when equipped with drop tanks under its wings.
