The F-16CJ Block 50 variant is the newest F-16 currently being deployed to U.S. units. Major upgrades to the Block 50 included a more powerful turbo General Electric engine, AGM-88 HARM (High-Speed Anti-Radiation Missile) and targeting system. Among its many variants was the Mk.XVI, which was a Mk.IX airframe that was powered by a Merlin 266 engine license-built by Packard Motor Car Company in the United States. Most Mk.XVIs featured the larger rudder and E Type wing with two 20mm cannons and two 12.7mm machine guns. With the introduction of the teardrop canopy, the rear upper fuel tank capacity was reduced to 33 gal. and that of the forward lower fuel tank was increased to 48 gal. to compensate. 1,054 Mk.XVIs produced were from September 1944 until July 1945. During the war, they were deployed on the European front and served as fighter-bombers. In the post-war period, the Mk.XVI was used by the RAF as well as the Belgian and Greek air forces until the early-1950s.

The Supermarine Spitfire was designed by R.J. Mitchell and its distinctive silhouette makes it one of the most widely-recognized fighters of WWII. Famous for its exploits during the Battle of Britain, the Spitfire continued to evolve to counter newer Axis aircraft. As a result of this evolution, numerous variants of the Spitfire were born and served with distinction in the RAF as well as the air forces of many other countries until well after the end of WWII.

The Spitfre Mk.XVI was almost identical to the Mk.IX in nearly all aspects except that most were powered by a Packard-built Merlin 266 engine which had taller dimensions than the Rolls Royce 66 engine and featured a bubble canopy with a “low back” fuselage. Other new structural changes saw the Mk.XVI equipped with a larger 96 gallon main fuel tank, as well as two additional fuel tanks installed at the rear of the fuselage and a larger oil sump to allow it to flylonger distances. Mk.XVIes were mainly used in ground-attack roles and came with the “E” armament configuration of two 20mm cannons and two 12.7mm Browning machine guns. Also, as concrete tarmacs became more common as the war progressed, changes to the camber angle of the Spitfire’s landing gears were made to make for more efficient landings and take-offs. With the changes made to the new gun and cannon positioning, ammunition ejection ports, and the landing gear design, the wings featured new bulges compared to the Mk.IX. As the Tone was designed to provide reconnaissance even during battle, she was therefore armed with four 20.3cm twin gun turrets which were concentrated forward of the bridge while the aft deck was dedicated to aircraft operations and could carry up to 6 floatplanes. With a rational hull design, she featured a top speed of 35 knots and had a long cruising range. As the Pacific War broke out in December 1941, the Tone served during the Pearl Harbor attack and was also apart of the Battle of Midway and the Battle of the Philippine Sea. Later in October 1944, the Battle of Leyte Gulf saw the Tone contribute in sinking the USS Gambier Bay. What made this aircraft an interesting proposition was its configuration. This was indeed a two-engine design, but centred around an unusual push-pull design. That in itself might make the aircraft sound like a non-starter, but the Do 335 was arguably one of, or THE fastest piston-engine aircraft that ever saw service, as the design eliminated the traditional parasitic drag element that was typical for a standard two-engine design layout. It was also very versatile.

Conceived from the outset as a multirole machine, this adaptable design could be used as a straight fighter aircraft, and also as a night-fighter, complete with a second, tandem crew position that gave that version of the Do 335 its distinctive humpback appearance. Bombs could also be carried in an internal bay, and if you required a heavy fighter, then this was possible by mounting two MK103 cannon in two wing-mounted pods that protruded from the wing leading edge (HK Models kit #01E07).

The Do 335 was also a robust and highly manoeuvrable machine, and one that could actually cope with a rear engine failure. It was also one of the few aircraft of the time that was fitted with an ejection seat. Should this need to be used, the canopy, rear pro- peller and upper tail fin would be blasted away bythe use of explosive bolts, preventing the pilot from striking them on his way out. Another unusual feature of this aircraft was the cruciform tail layout. A downward pointing fin was included, which would hopefully negate any possible rear propeller damage that could result from an awkward landing. First flown in 1943, the project wasn’t without its problems. Whilst the aircraft was in- herently stable on both ground and in the air, due to the rear engine resting behind the centre of gravity, it did suffer from some technical issues that were never overcome, such as a weak undercarriage. Despite the great hopes that the Nazis had for the Do 335, like many of their wonder designs, it simply came too late to make any difference, with only 37 being built by the war’s end. Allies evaluation of this Do 335 ‘Pfeil’ showed that it was an excellent performer and could have been a serious opponent, had it not been for Germany’s lack of production capability and onerous bureaucratic and person- al in-fighting. Upon hearing rumors of the large Yamato-class battleships fielding massive 18 inch guns, the designers of the Montana envisioned a battleship that was larger than the Iowa-class with more firepower and stronger armor. Without having to adhere to restrictions on size due to the Panama canal, the Montana-class grew to a length of 280 meters long over all (921 ft) with a beam of 37 meters (121 ft) and a displacement of 65,000 tons which was 20,000 tons heavier than the Iowa's 45,000 tons. A trade-off of this size and weight increase meant that the Montana class was slower than the Iowa's and other carriers in the fleet.

Five ships of the class were ordered in 1942 and given designations BB-67 through BB-71 with the BB-67 Montana being the first of her class. Sadly no Montana's were ever built or even had their keels laid down. The Montana class was cancelled for good in 1943 when it became quite apparent that the era of battleships was over and the navy needed more aircraft carriers and ships fast enough to escort the carriers. However a part of the Montana class lives on even today, the hull design for the Montana class was later re-used in the Midway-class aircraft carriers. Conceived from the outset as a multirole machine, this adaptable design could be used as a straight fighter aircraft, and also as a night-fighter.

Should this need to be used, the canopy, rear pro- peller and upper tail fin would be blasted away by the use of explosive bolts, preventing the pilot from striking them on his way out. Despite the great hopes that the Germans had for the Do 335, like many of their wonder designs, it simply came too late to make any difference, with only 37 being built by the war’s end. Allies evaluation of this Do 335 ‘Pfeil’ showed that it was an excellent performer and could have been a serious opponent, had it not been for Germany’s lack of production capability and onerous bureaucratic and person- al in-fighting. This masterpiece film uses miniatures-based special effects and innovative filming techniques to tell a tranquil and mysterious story and create a highly realistic experience. The Space Station 5, which was a relay point between the Earth and the moon, played a major part in the story of the film, and made a huge impression on moviegoers due to its partially constructed state; the effect of rotation to generate artificial gravity was so well-done that it gave the film the illusion of being a documentary rather than a work of fiction. Coupled with the soundtrack of "The Beautiful Blue Danube," this famous scene has gone down in movie history.

Moebius Model has finally released Space Station 5 to modelers worldwide, with a completely new mold! This 1/2600-scale kit features both the completed ring and the portions of the ring that are still under construction, just as seen in the movie. Even parts of the seemingly complicated truss structure that are still being completed are skillfully divided into parts for smooth assembly.
